In case you missed it – this was a joyful occasion – and all the entertainment was supplied by HWu3a talent – Truly a case of BY THE MEMBERS FOR THE MEMBERS!
There were many longtime favourites along with a few innovations suggested by Peter Saunders, our recently appointed Groups Facilitator and for him, his first HWu3a Christmas event.
As usual attendees were greeted by members of the STAR team, this time, Ian and Kate. Members were treated to a welcome drink of non-alcoholic mulled wine, mince pies and German cookies as well as the customary tea and coffee.
The team in the kitchen, led by Anne Wilson, was absolutely brilliant as this was a bumper crowd. Thanks to Steve, Pamela and Linda for setting out numerous extra chairs to accommodate the hordes.
Before the entertainment even started, the audience were presented with a seasonal quiz provided by Peter which seemed to go down very well.
Then the entertainment commenced. Dave read ‘Be kind to your Turkeys this Christmas’ before Eric led the Ukulele band with some admirable singing as they played a variety of favourites including gospel songs, rock n roll classics and then….

More poetry reading from Jill and then the Ladies Choir took to the stage.
Actually, their leader Christine was the only person with a stage and apart from leading the choir with great aplomb, she did exceedingly well not to fall off her limited elevated perch.
We were treated to a wide range of songs including the very quirky ‘After the Twelve Days of Christmas’. John, the accompanist later shared a poem evoking all the great memories of a school nativity.

More music was supplied by the Handbell Group. Apparently, they are a very shy bunch, shunning publicity and the glamour of a live stage but agreed to allowing Jack to film them in action and then share the video on the big screen. Many ears were set ringing by their performance. Marvellous!
Following the answers to the quiz, well done anyone who beat my meagre score, it was time for audience participation.

Phil and Mandy brought the curtain down with their Singalong presentation. This group is very popular in its own right but this was an opportunity for everyone to join in with a great selection of seasonal favourites including a Slade classic and The Twelve Days of Christmas. Phil added extra entertainment as he juggled with 12 cards and almost got it right. Mandy reminded him that there’s always next year!
If you wish to be involved in this, in any capacity, to help the HWu3a to provide these wonderful events, don’t hesitate to make yourself known.
